The West? When I was a kid in northern Vermont ('60s-'70s) we would have snow on the ground from mid-October until May or June. One year we had some snow in our front yard under a big pine tree on the 4th of July. We had snowbanks on the road to our house that were so high that I could almost touch the transformers on the electrical poles. We got snowed in for a week and had to use our 23.5hp SkiDoo to get to the store for milk and eggs. Don't talk about "gee, it's finally obvious"; I've known it for decades.
