Ask HN: HN Dark Mode?
It seems we were promised dark mode for HN here over almost three years ago [0] but to no avail.
When could we expect dark mode natively on HN? I prefer it to absolutely work without JS and no CSS hacks or trickery.

- night-rider 4y agoHN is feature minimalist. The beauty is you can skin it in any number of ways due to its simple design and it’s hackable. Firefox on iOS has a dark mode and HN appears dark when you visit it. I’m really liking it since blue light damages the eyes.
- uaas 4y agoLast time I checked, there was no consensus on the damage you can avoid by using dark mode.
- night-rider 4y agoIt’s an accessibility thing. I don’t like the discomfort of shining what is effectively a torch into my eyes as I read. Maybe there’s no research but it’s essentially a preference.
- ipaddr 4y agoInstead of dark mode you can change the brightness of your screen.
- yesenadam 4y agoIf you really want to ask the mod(s) a question and get an answer, write to them at the email address given in the guidelines.
- nittanymount 4y agowonder what is percentage of people are using dark mode with system and apps ... somehow, I don't feel it is good/easy for eyes, and harder to read with dark mode at day time.
- notesinthefield 4y agoI read it almost exclusively via Safari in dark mode using the Noir extension on desktop and mobile. HN is a very simple site to invert.
- twoquestions 4y agoHN plays really nice with Dark Reader, I've been using it for years. https://darkreader.org/ https://darkreader.org/
