I wrote 'mu' (http://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu http://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu), which let's you index/search maildirs; I'm currently adding glue to use it as an emacs-based e-mail client as well (basically, something between wanderlust and notmuch).
