Probably "up to date" was the wrong phrase-- it's more "are the fundamentals there". I've had lots devs send me assignments that miss the table stakes of front-end dev work: is it keyboard navigable, are proper elements used, is the CSS something we can actually work with. I'm not sure what you're suggesting? Just a chat where we go over all that stuff? I'm happy to take into consideration other ways of assessing.
