Carnot's law is what you want. Max efficiency is temperature differential divided by hot absolute temperature.
So, with super heated steam of say 600 degrees C, I'd make that a maximum of about 66% theoretical, so 50% actual sounds pretty good.
If you could build a plasma heat engine, you could get near 100% but I've no idea what that would technically look like.
- nine_k 5y agoYou can likely harvest a little bit more by using a lower temperature differential in another step, using, say, substances that boil at room temperature, to cool the water after it condenses and cannot produce work by expansion.
