I don’t see a problem with them. The majority of users never need one and even when I use them I usually use them infrequently. I often leave them on the ends of cables. My display port cable has a usb c dongle left on it so it’s like it’s natively usb C anyway. Sure, if you do some weird stuff or have an extreme use case, I can see why you would want more built in ports, but for the majority of users, they only plug in the charging cable and maybe video out.
