I remember seeing this in practice at a meetup - I believe it was at the Boston AWS meetup at Vistaprint several years ago. Someone was running FORTRAN web services as CGI applications, inside of nginx, inside of a container, running on top of Docker Swarm. Say what you will - it seems pretty practical.
