Oregon students shouldn’t have to prove they can write or do math to get diploma

I just do not understand why basic, public education has to be such a mess. My own primary education was more inclusive of skills, knowledge, critical thinking, learning how to learn, civics, and all that a young adult might need or want to start that phase of life. My own kids got less, and I had to make significant contributions as a parent in civics, skills, critical thinking. Thankfully, literacy was there, as was math. My own kids are now facing schooling their kids and have already expressed their take on all this being similar to my own in that they do not see the robust, quality education they received! -->Which was very considerably diluted in many ways from my own, despite an order greater tech and information resource availability! We had some 8 bit computers and literary books, but we also had a metal shop, car shop, wood, gardening, farming, and all sorts of real skills to be educated on too. My kids had much less. Building quality people, teasing their strengths out, empowering them to be who they are, understanding they will eventually be the future and our caretakers in our old age is simple, human work. Why, why, why do we seem to consistently avoid and or shortcut this work and or limit resources so damn much? There are plenty of us willing and able to do the work! They want to do it and should be honored and respected and well compensated as well as enabled to do it. I just do not get it. Do we, and by "we" I mean those of us making decisions right now, really not want that possible future? Sandbagging? Or, somehow are ill equipped to see the basic way forward? WTF? Seriously.

  No group actually wants what's best for everyone. Some want babysitting, some want lower taxes at any cost, some want sports teams, some want to dump unparented kids off and make them everyone else's problem. No one really cares or measures the things you're talking about. The result of Anglo-sphere style capitalism and democracy is that complex social services like actual "education" are impossible because no one wants them until they're in dire shortage.

    I read Finland has a department of the future of some kind. Man! The idea of that seems compelling. Yeah, your take resonates. Maybe, my basic question should be, "how can we give more of a shit about basics?" It is not like any of it is new, or people somehow are changed. The time tested, production proven means and methods are simply necessary.
