There was a time that some Microsoft software was free for evaluation for college students, but in fact, anyone with a .edu domain name was able to sign up. While I took advantage of this as a high school student, I assume faculty and non-teaching staff, as well as alumni, could have done likewise. At this point, TLDs matter about as much as your area code. They ceased being useful in the mid-2000s.
