Because the way to stop the spread of flu would be living in full lockdown forever. Not only would that be the end for most of the economy, just a year has shown the other serious negative health impacts that inflicts on people. We have locked down to deal with the imminent disaster posed by COVID-19, but pretending this is sustainable in the long term is delusional. Illness is a fact of life. Maybe one day we'll cure flu and the common cold, but in the meantime we accept the minimal risk in exchange for being able to actually enjoy life.
