    I went on the same search. For those interest in formal definition: Commercial open source software projects are open source software projects that are owned by a single firm that derives a direct and significant revenue stream from the software (reference: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-03132-8_2 https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-03132-8_...).

      "owned" is definitely not the right verb there. "Exclusively commercially supported because there's no demand for a competitor" ...?

  > COSS companies like ... GitHub, ... Hmmm. GitHub is an enabler and supporter of OSS - but unless something major has changed and I missed it - their main product isn't OSS. They probably shouldn't be on that list.
