These platforms quite intentionally assumed two contradictory roles: that of editor, and that of public square. When they take steps that are consistent with one of those roles' responsibilities, they undercut the other. To the extent that they quite intentionally did their best to assume both of those roles, it's not entirely ridiculous to give them flak for failing to meet the expectations of those roles. I'd be more sympathetic if not for the fact that they got into that position entirely intentionally.
