I'm guessing: You didn't deliver tangible results and therefore were deemed useless. It was likely one "things are going well!" update after another, while still failing to deliver the most rudimentary of results that a low-level analyst armed with Excel and some basic SQL delivered. Results that impact the bottom-line are the only thing that matters. If you cannot align your work to that, you're going to be undervalued and viewed as useless.
