I have similar thoughts like this, that people in power could do some serious good if they would change their tunes, but unless there is something actionable for me to do... I don't see how these appeals to authority are going to make a difference. Maybe some NBA players might care, but I seriously doubt the NBA higher-ups would ever go for something like this.
Stop buying goods from China, and let them know that you're not buying them because of the Uighur genocide. That's about all I can do, and I'm doing it here. I'm assuming China is reading HN as religiously as I am.
- salamimonger 6y agoI can't help but be pessimistic. People like you or me on HN can stop buying good from China, but what about the majority of poor and lower class people who are extremely price sensitive? China has the ability to keep undercutting everyone else, and people have no choice but to go China or go broke. The west has pigeonholed itself into a situation where it's simply unprofitable to do business without outsourcing. So it's not that simple to tell people to stop buying from China, unless you pair it with giving your people the economic freedom and opportunity to say no to China and cheap goods. GIVE POOR PEOPLE MONEY - is what im saying.
- willbobaggins 6y agoHey there, thanks so much for taking the time to read and engage with it! I think you're right. I've mentioned this elsewhere-this is by no means a high percentage play, it just may be more likely than most other things we can do. You could have a reasonable shot if you just convinced 150 nba starters this was a great idea. That's a number one person could call.
