I can't find the article describing it but the gender bias tends to be disregarded when you add one additional parameter: place of birth. In third world countries, women reprensent 50% of the students in engineering classes ( for reasons that are easily understandable). Actually, the bias observed applyies in countries where freedom of choice is given to everyone.
