If you wrote your personal data on some disk drive and then to read this drive you need let's say Mac/Win because it's a closed format. And Mac/Win cost money. How it differs from ransomware then? Sure you have more time to decide, usually more than 3 days and it costs a bit less, but is it much of a difference there? Probaly a choice to start using it, but is it really a choice? In many cases it's not really. So back to your point, I understand it, but do you?

    so no, you don’t. the sony root kit did not ransomware your data. your new example is also 100x less harmful than encrypting your data for ransom. you’re grasping at straws.
