Did you ensure your new domain was indexed before doing the switchover? that seems to be a common mistake - people just turn off one domain and turn on the second domain the same day. I've had success with launching the second domain (resolving to the same server as the first domain), waiting for the pages to be indexed, then 301 redirecting the old domain to the new domain / submitting the request via webmaster central.
