What, nobody mentioned Microsoft Bob yet? :) That thing was terrible, but I'm kinda sad that a Microsoft Bob-like window manager (or whatever you want to call it) never panned out. Yes, it blows for productivity, but it had "personality" - it was colorful and silly unlike your average UI today which either looks "industrial" or subscribes to the "everything is flat and bland" school of thought.
