I agree with author's point in regard of fiction/non fiction literature, as it gets traction among readers there is a better chance to sell a hard copy or get a citation. However in case of professional and academic literature, as much as I would prefer that personally, such approach simply is not maintainable. The best middle ground I've come across is when author gives out free copies per each request (like a letter from student who can't afford to pay the full amount)
