  ..why? i see comments with ':-)' all the time. are the people here so pretentious that they're fundamentally opposed to using an ideogram? better hope there aren't any closeted road-signage-designers lurking on HN then

    Emojis are too jocular for the tone we are trying to strike here. They lower the level of discourse down to something more like Reddit or Twitter.
