I grew up with this as well. My 'solution' was to chart my own course. While i've never (yet) achieved huge success in the traditional manner, I continue to learn, grow and push myself. The problem, as I see it, comes from the expectations of parents, teachers, etc. While they may mean well, their guidance tends to be too conventional. They want to fit you into the System, just in a slightly different role.
