My family does monthly email updates mainly because not everyone is on Facebook. No noise. Just what's new with everyone, once in a while. There's no ads, no posts about what they had for lunch, no reposts about their political opinions, etc. We don't even use mailing lists. We usually just reply to the last one, and I have a contact group with everyone in the family.
