When the Roman Empire found Jesus and slowly devolved into the Roman Catholic Church over the next thousand years, its "war on paganism" spread throughout Europe and Asia, with a death toll that is hard to estimate, but easily in the millions if you add up all the crusades and inquisitions. Unsurprisingly, many pagans chose to convert to Christianity, rather than be murdered on the spot. So maybe we can stop using this word "beacon", and use something more appropriate. How about "fortress"?
