  I'd vote for the first and not the second... perlmonks.com will probably also say "try more parenthesis".

  Both are wrong answers. [] "parens" (arrayrefs to enable two list assignments) would be ok, but we don't call [] parens, they are called brackets. perlmonks is long dead.
