With low federal funding rates and every CS Department having doubled in size it is barely possible to do research IN academia. You spend nearly most of your time writing grants that don’t get funded. The little federal funding that is available ends up mostly at elite/ivy schools who dominate NSF panels and conference program committees :-( kudos if you can do independent research outside of it though
