I may be missing something here but isn't this the same Graydon that wrote the Rust bootstrap compiler in Ocaml? Wouldn't that have exposed him to the ML Module

Graydon is clearly aware and links to some relevant stuff in that post, I assume this is just an elaboration for other commenters' sake.
