Because women are paid less, so couples decide the best paid member will keep working.
- ashark 9y agoMagnifying this effect, my understanding is that men are much more open to marrying down on the income ladder than women are. So the average gap within marriages/partnerships/whatever is even worse than you'd expect just from the base, general salary difference in the population.
