I've been reading more into it and it seems like back in 2008 they came up with an algorithm to do this: https://blogs.oracle.com/ahl/expand-o-matic-raid-z https://blogs.oracle.com/ahl/expand-o-matic-raid-z But it doesn't look like there's been any movement on an implementation and it seems like it's high effort and mostly home users who want this, not enterprises who might be willing to pay for. Ah well, guess I'll stick with mdraid for now.
