WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, so I'm fairly sure it still comes with the FB bs..

    I cacn't imagine the problem with Facebook being the things my loved ones care about rather than the aggressive data collection of the ad agency itself

Avoid facebook by switching and convincing people to use another facebook service ? You're funny. At the very least move to something that's not owned by facebook. Preferably not an app on a pocket-computer that can be used as a phone.
