Hmm, the article mentioned nothing about the weight. For a medium sized quadcopter, 3 times more energy (given the same weight) means as long as 3 hours of flight time which would make all these drone delivery dream come true.
- eridius 10y agoUnfortunately, as hwillis explains in another comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13779143 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13779143), it's not 3x energy for the same weight, it's 3x energy for the same size. It seems to actually be about 2.5x heavier for the same energy.
- cb18 10y agoWhat medium-sized quadcopter has an hour long flight time? Is this something you follow very closely? Do you know of any write-ups on the economics and other feasibilities of drone delivery? Seems like for a cargo of any much heft and a delivery distance beyond a handful of km a battery improvement of 3x is a good start but still wanting. I may be off base here and drone delivery may in fact currently be more feasible than I suspect. I'm mainly basing this thinking on the 20-30min flight times of current prosumer camera drones. I know there're other kinds.
