I've been to parties in open plan houses and I've been to parties in many-small-rooms houses and I'm not convinced one is better than the other. In any case I'm not going to prioritise the odd occasion I have parties over the more frequent occasions that I want to read a book, the wife wants to watch TV, one kid wants to run around in circles, another wants to practice the trumpet and the third just wants to hit a saucepan with a spoon. If you have multiple family members it's nice that they can get away from each other.
